Our CPT partner, A.P. van den Berg, has switching to the new ISO-standard ISO 22476-1:2022 for CPT cone manufacture and calibration.
The main changes in the new standard are as follows:
- Dimensional tolerances of cones have been updated
- Application class scheme has been replaced by a cone class and test category classification scheme
- Introduction of temperature influence on measurements monitoring and requirements of internal temperature sensor for cone class 0 and class 1
- Requirements for the calibration of cones have been added
Manufacturing
An option is to be able to measure temperature at the cone tip, an important parameter for accurate cone resistance measurements when pushing through stiff material. According to ISO 22476-1:2022, Class 1 and Class 0 cones include temperature (T) measurement.
Calibration
Calibrating to Class 1 and Class 0 according to ISO 22476-1:2022 is a much more rigorous process. Over half the new standard is dedicated the calibration process.
Implementation has required a substantial investment in automation and software development to enable calibration to the new standard. A.P. van den Berg is welcoming visitors to have a sneak peak at this new facility if you are making a trip to Holland.
As cone calibration is now only required every 12 months, we are actively encouraging our clients to avail themselves of the Icone Test Device to check the performance of your Icones after every job. It’s a verification check, rather than a calibration.
The Icone Test Device measures three standard CPT parameters:
- cone tip resistance (qc)
- sleeve friction (fs)
- pore water pressure (u) – if the Icone has this functionality
For example, the force exerted on the cone, which can be read on the manometer of the test apparatus, is compared to the value indicated on the data acquisition system.
The Icone Test Device is suited to 5, 10 and 15 cm2 Icones.
