The AGS WA In Situ Testing Practical Workshop, hosted by the Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS), was held on 1 August 2025 in Osborne Park, Perth. The workshop provided geotechnical engineers, researchers, and industry professionals with a hands-on opportunity to gain practical experience in a range of in situ testing techniques.
Attendees had the chance to experience tests used to evaluate material conditions, including in situ modulus and bearing capacity methods such as the static Plate Load Test (PLT), Light Weight Deflectometers (LWDs), Trailer Mounted Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD), and Intelligent Compaction. Penetration tests demonstrated included Cone Penetration Testing (CPT), Dynamic Probing, PANDA [variable energy] Probe, and the Automated Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP). Geophysical techniques, such as Continuous Surface Waves (CSW) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), were also covered as complementary testing methods.
The workshop was designed to be practical rather than theoretical, giving attendees the chance to observe full-scale demonstrations at a contractor yard. It allowed early-career professionals to discuss techniques with experienced operators and gave seasoned practitioners an opportunity to review the applicability and limitations of each testing method. Presenting at the event, Insitutek shared expertise, engaged with attendees, and contributed to discussions on field practices and test specification. The day was both informative and enjoyable, with food and drinks provided for participants.
