On 12 June 2025, civil engineering professionals gathered at the Port of Brisbane for the Australian Geomechanics Society QLD Insitu Testing Practical Workshop. The event focused on practical demonstrations of key insitu testing methods for:

  • penetration tests including Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) with Dilatometer Test (DMT), direct push soil sampling, Down-hole Shear Vane and Down Hole Seismic, Dynamic Probing, PANDA [variable energy] Probe and the Automated Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP)
  • in situ modulus and bearing capacity via static Plate Load Test (PLT), Light Weight Deflectometers (LWDs) and Trailer Mounted Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD)
  • geophysics as a complementary testing regime to physical tests including Multi-channel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)

The aim of the day was to allow civil and geomechanics practitioners an opportunity to experience how the tests are completed in practice, such that they are familiar with how the data reported on test reports is collected in the field and better understand when and how to specify the tests. The field day was a great opportunity for early career professionals to discuss the techniques with experienced operators, and for experienced practitioners to discuss the applicability and limitations of each insitu testing method.

Led by Dr. David Lacey and Insitutek’s Robin Power, the workshop gave participants hands-on experience and a chance to discuss the application of these methods.

Bringing together this course was an example of true Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS) collaboration, with the supporter organisations generously contributing equipment and expertise.
