Last week, the heart of Alice Springs became a hub for innovation and collaboration as engineers, researchers, local councils, and industry leaders gathered for the REAAA Low Volume Roads Symposium – Connecting the Dots.

The three-day event shone a spotlight on roads that are vital to regional communities yet often under-served. It was a space where ideas turned practical, with discussions centred on how to design, build, and maintain roads that are not only efficient but also resilient to the challenges of climate, terrain, and limited resources.

Insitutek was proud to be part of this event as both a presenter and exhibitor, sharing our insights and learning from others who are equally committed to improving infrastructure performance in regional and remote areas.

Our Chief Executive, Robin Power together with Stephen Flux, presented “Moving on from CBR – Embracing a Modulus-Based Approach.” Their session explored how shifting from traditional CBR testing to a modulus-based framework can lead to more accurate, performance-driven pavement designs — a step forward in improving the reliability and longevity of low-volume roads.

Throughout the symposium, participants heard from experts tackling topics such as sustainable material use, better drainage and erosion control systems, and innovative low-budget maintenance strategies. There was also a strong focus on climate resilience — particularly how to build roads that can endure flooding, heat, and soil movement.

Beyond the presentations, the workshops and field trips brought these concepts to life. Seeing local teams put theory into practice on-site reinforced the importance of adapting solutions to suit specific environmental and community contexts.

More than just a technical event, the symposium was a reminder of the collective effort it takes to create lasting impact in infrastructure. The exchange of experiences, challenges, and success stories underscored the value of working together toward a shared goal — building better, more resilient roads for the future.
