The Earthworks: Theory to Practice – Design and Construction workshop, held on 29-30 May 2024, at Rydges Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, provided industry professionals with a structured approach to understanding earthworks principles. The course, led by high respected geotechnical principal, Dr Burt Look OAM, was based on Burt’s 2022 book “Earthworks: Theory to Practice – Bridging Design and Construction” and years of practical experience from over 1,000 engineers who previously attended this program.

Rather than relying on rigid numerical targets, the workshop emphasised critical thinking in applying engineering judgment to earthworks decision-making. Through case studies, attendees explored real-world applications of soil behaviour, sub-grade treatment, and specification development, recognising that a test or design suitable in one climate or geology may not apply elsewhere.

Using Innovative In-Situ Testing Methods as an Enabler

As part of the workshop, Robin Power, Business Development & Strategy at Insitutek and Chair of Ground Level Alliance, led an interactive session showcasing innovative in-situ testing methods that are transforming earthworks decision-making. His presentation included:

  • In-situ modulus and bearing capacity assessments using Plate Load Testing (PLT) and Light Weight Deflectometers (LWDs).
  • Penetration testing methods such as Cone Penetration Testing (CPT), Dynamic Probing Super Heavy (DPSH), PANDA Probe, and Automated Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP).
  • Intelligent compaction technologies for optimising field compaction processes.

This session reinforced the growing adoption of in-situ testing methods in major civil construction projects, providing engineers and project managers with faster, more reliable data to support their decision-making.
